It’s getting close to crunch time! Christmas is just 10 days away, and I can see the sweat forming on your brow. The choices you make now will either snowball into more debt, or allow you to continue on your path to freedom with your money. Choose freedom!
So, you need some more gifts (think teachers, neighbors, work friends, etc.) but have no more money? Time to get creative, and I’ve got some ideas to get you started.
But - before we dive in, I want to remind you that everyone around you will support and encourage you on your path to financial wellness, so be honest with them. Tell them that you’re committed to climbing out of your hole the right way, and they will cheer you on! Don’t feel embarrassed because you decided to be wise with your money and to go a new direction with Christmas gifts - embrace your new wisdom. You will feel so good at the end of the season when you don’t have 5 months of bills on the horizon.
There are countless ways to show others you care about and appreciate them (so search away) but here are a few to get you started:
1. DIY
Don’t underestimate the power of creative gifts you can make yourself. And, if you have kids, they can join in the fun of making them. The pride in their eyes as they give them away is priceless.
Sugar Scrub
A few years back, my daughter made a sugar scrub to gift to most of her friends, and she didn’t even have to go to the store to buy anything! Sugar scrubs take at most 3 ingredients, are super easy to follow, and are healthy for your skin. Check out this awesome recipe by Eating by Elaine here.
Coaster Set
Coasters are one of the most under-appreciated aspects of a household, and can be made from everything, such as: Tiles, Wood Slices, and even Crochet! Such cute ideas here!
Hot Cocoa in a Jar
Hot Chocolate is a super easy gift, and one that is usually loved by all, especially those with kids. Have fun decorating the jar, and watch their eyes light up. Take a look at the Pioneer Woman’s recipe here.
2. Budget Friendly Finds
If you aren’t a super crafty person, find some inexpensive items that are easy and still meaningful. There are lots of different options to choose from, and you can even share a laugh with friends!
Fun Socks
Socks are one of the most versatile things that can be worn, and come in all sorts of patterns and styles. Some of the best socks are super cheap, and who doesn’t love Christmas socks!? Walmart has a ton of cheap fun socks, or even the dollar store would have a couple options to pick and choose from to match with your family!
Baking Supply Kits
Of course, Baking is a must around the holidays, so why not gift them supplies for that very thing! You can find premade cookie decorating kits or gingerbread house kits (fun for the whole family!) or create a mini gift basket full of cookie cutters, sprinkles, frosting and more. Think what you like to use and go with that!
Dishes
If you’re like us, you probably have too many mugs, but consider going to a thrift store to find a unique dish and then fill it with your favorite Christmas treat! You never know what you’ll find. Or, look at your own supply at home and re-gift something. I won’t tell!
So there you have it - a starting point. Prioritize meaningfulness, not price, and Christmas shopping might be enjoyable again, for you and your budget.
